Ready-to-go serial to Ethernet module: EG-SR-7150MJ

EG-SR-7150MJ is a RoHS-compliant, ready-to-go serial to Ethernet module, complete with mounted RJ-45 connector for instant use. Simple software set-up allows users to create a 10/100Mbps Ethernet interface with a maximum serial rate of 230Kbps rapidly.

Set-up for the 1.6" x 2.2" EG-SR-7150MJ is very easy with the configuration software provided. Three different modes of operation are supported: TCP server, TCP client, and UDP. TCP guarantees data delivery, but UDP doesn't require acknowledgement, so communication can be faster. Once the TCP client and server have established connection, data can be transparently transmitted bi-directionally. EG-SR-7150MJ's IP Address can be manually assigned (static IP), or IP, subnet and gateway address can be acquired from the DHCP server automatically. Serial commands can be hardware- or software-triggered. Configuration can be done on-site if need be, even without a PC, using a simple serial device (keypad, etc.)

EG-SR-7150MJ is based on WIZnet's TCP/IP-offload IC W3150A with Realtek's RTL8201 Ethernet driver chip. EG-SR-7150MJ has a built-in Atmel AT89C51RC2 8-bit microcontroller with 32KB Flash Memory and 32 KB SRAM. EG-SR-7150MJ offers 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing on its RJ-45 connector. Protocols supported include TCP, UDP, IP ARP, ICMP, MAC, PPPoE. Serial signals available are TXD, RXD, RTS, CTS, GND. RS232 data formats: Parity - None, Even, Odd; 7/8 Data bits; Flow Control: RTS/CTS, XON/XOFF. EG-SR-7150MJ needs only 3.3V@150mA.

Evaluation/Set-up kit EG-SR-7150MJ-EVB provides DB-9 connector for quick PC hook-up, CD (Configuration Program, Schematic, Manual), a 5V 500mA Power Adapter and Serial and UTP cables.

SG5-UT Robotic Arm

SG5-UT(Ultra Torque) Robotic Arm
The SG5-UT, load balanced, robotic arm featuring all aluminum construction and the only fully expandable "smart grip" design components (detailed below). Feature for feature, the SG5 series presents the most powerful and sophisticated, all aluminum 5-axis robotic arm system available today.

Key Feature

All parts are precision CNC machined from .063 ga. 5052 brushed, sheet aluminum

The aluminum components are anodized to a smooth, scratch resistant, graphite finish using a type II anodizing process (the most impermeable finish next to military type III anodizing)
All servo pivot points use integrated pem stud pivot points. Pem studs are cylindrically shaped aluminum spacers that are pressed into the aluminum with over 300 pounds of pressure. Unlike other manufactures we do not use tape or glue in these critical stress areas (if your not sure, simply read their construction manuals.) Integrated pem nuts for ease of construction. Pem nuts are nuts that are pressed into the aluminum with over 200 lbs. of pressure. This makes

construction much easier and faster.
Pass thru holes and slots strategically located throughout the arm assembly for convenient wire routing.
2 integrated SPST switches for convenient power routing to servos and supporting electronics.
3 integrated mounting tabs for convenient attachment to your robotic platform
Tabs and Electronics
Accommodates all of the Parallax microcontroller boards including the BOE, BS2P40, BS2P24 and others.
The arm incorporates a custom engineered, counterbalanced retract system that effectively ensures maximum lifting and efficient servo power use both during operation and at rest. A counterbalanced arm is critical to ensure long servo life and maximum lifting power.

Sensor Engineered Grip Design

The most critical aspect of any robotic arm is in the design of the manipulator or gripper. A robotic arms usefulness and functionality is directly related to the arms ability to sense and successfully manipulate its immediate environment. We developed the gripper assembly to include the following critical design features:
The gripper assembly contains an integrated, adjustable electronics stand located above the gripper assembly to accommodate an array of CCD cameras, infrared sensors and other sensing electronics.

The gripper contains (4) integrated slots to accommodate multiple sensing opto-electronics components.
The ends of the gripper are rounded for an even gripping surface area regardless of the gripper angle relative to the object being grasped.
The gripper drive system consists of a high resolution, 60 tooth, heavy duty, resin gear train driven by a high torque HiTec HS 475 servo - All of these combined components are critical for firm, precise gripper manipulation of objects.
The rounded gripper ends can conveniently accommodate the "Flexiforce" pressure sensor for precise gripper pressure measurement and control.
1/16" volara, cross-linked polyethylene foam is used to line the inside of the gripper surface for maximum grip adhesion.

Honda’s humanoid robot Asimo

Robot Asimo judges rock-scissors-paper contests
Tanja Aitamurto | June 14th, 2008

Honda’s humanoid robot Asimo has taken another step on its way to become human-like. Actually, make that superhuman-like. Asimo, which resembles a small astronaut, doesn’t only dance, serve coffee and conduct operas, but now can judge rock-paper-scissors contests.

The judging is made possible by Asimo’s new ability to understand three voices shouting at once. This is actually more than a human is able to do: We humans can only focus on one particular sound source at once. The ability to isolate one sound from a noisy background is called the cocktail party effect.
Asimo’s superpower in isolating voices comes from a software called HARK that Japanese researchers have developed. HARK uses eight microphones attached to Asimo’s body and face to spot where each voice is coming from and to isolate the voices from each other. The software records voices, works out how reliably it has isolated the voices, and passes only the reliable voice extracts into Asimo’s speech recognition system to be decoded.

This quality control is a remarkable step, because Asimo’s own speech recognition system can’t isolate voices from a noise. Without a helping software, Asimo’s system would get confused.

Now Asimo can follow and judge three people playing rock-paper-scissors with 70-80 percent’s accuracy. The result is quite good, but the task is quite simple too, as the vocabulary used in rock-paper-scissors contest is small. When the software was used to follow more complicated sentences, the accuracy of the identifying the sentences went down to 30-40 percent.

Asimo has still a way to go before it can be taken to a cocktail party to chat with people. But this stage might not be as far as we think: Asimo might become better partner to party conversations, if the latest results of the studies of brain activity when dealing with the cocktail party effect, can be used in robot developing.
Asimo is one of the world’s most advanced humanoid robots, and it’s ability to isolate voices is a big step towards Honda’s goal to create an advanced humanoid robot, that can work and live among the humans, and to help especially elderly or disadvantaged people. The news of Asimo’s new ability adds up with the other recent news about startups and investors’ interest in robots that seem to prove that robotics is one of the hottest things in hi-tech at the moment.

The QuadCrawler

The QuadCrawler is the largest and lightest of all aluminum quadruped kit available today. The QuadCrawler inherits the same efficient and powerful leg design as its larger cousin the HexCrawler. Expansion of your QuadCrawler kit is easy with the 3DOF upgrade kit and add-ons from Parallax, like the Hitachi Compass Module, and RF modules. Couple the QuadCrawler hardware extensibility with the the BS2-IC, Board of Education, and Parallax Servo Controller and you have an unbeatable combination.

Key Features
We believe that a Quadruped should have some key material and construction features to be a truly useful and robust robotic platform. Our QuadCrawler features include:

  • Super stiff yet light construction material - All aluminum components are precision CNC machined from incredibly strong .063 ga. 5052 aluminum sheeting.

  • Integrated Pem Stud Pivot Points - Pem studs are super smooth, solid aluminum spacers that are pressed into the aluminum body of the QuadCrawler with more than 300 pounds of pressure. These spacers are used as the servo pivot points for all of the QuadCrawlers legs. The combination of these spacers and the solid design and aluminum components are what gives the QuadCrawler it's overall rugged design and payload capacity.

  • Integrated Pem Nuts - Pem nuts are used throughout the key support points (16 in total) of the QuadCrawler. Pem nuts are nuts that are pressed into the aluminum sheeting with more than 200lbs. of pressure. Pem nuts lower the number of loose parts in our kits which makes our kits quick and easy to construct. Pem nuts also allow you to have quick and easy access to the lower deck of the QuadCrawler without removing major construction components.

  • Horizontally Centered Leg Design - To ensure equal, physical, horizontal movement of all legs during the QuadCrawlers walking cycle, the legs have been physically designed to align with the horizontal leg servos.

  • Pass Through Leg Design - Having the ability to expand and add lots of additional electronics and sensors to your hexapod is a key component of robotic experimentation and development. The QuadCrawler's "pass-thru" leg design allows you to route and secure electronics at any point on the legs of the QuadCrawler without wire or electronic components being exposed or interfering with the operation of the QuadCrawler.

  • Dual Deck Electronics Mount Design - The QuadCrawler has been designed so that you can mount the controlling electronics either on top of the upper deck or mounted inside, top of the lower deck. Also, the front and rear support brackets can swing open to allow easy access to the inside of the QuadCrawler for battery and electronics installation or removal.
Technical Specifications:
  • Material: Super strong .063 Gauge 5052 aluminum with type II anodizing for weather and scratch resistance
  • Dimensions: Overall dimensions - 12" X 15.25" leg to leg
  • Prototyping Space: Over 131 sq. inches of total prototyping space is available on the QuadCrawler body.
