9580 LEGO Education WeDo™ Construction Set

The 9580 LEGO® Education WeDo™ Construction Set enables students to build LEGO  models that attach to the LEGO® USB Hub and then control the models using computer programs. The set contains 158 elements including a LEGO Hub, motor, tilt sensor and a motion sensor that add  movement and intelligence to the model.

LEGO® USB Hub
The LEGO® USB Hub controls sensors and motors from the 2000095 LEGO  Education WeDo™  software. Power and data are transmitted from the LEGO motors and sensors to and from the  computer using the two LEGO Hub ports. The WeDo Software automatically detects the LEGO  Hub and any motors and sensors attached to it. Up to three LEGO Hubs can be attached.

Motor
The motor can be programmed to turn this way or that way and to move at different power levels.   Power for the motor is supplied through voltage from the computer’s USB port (5V). Axles or other  LEGO elements can be attached to the motor.

Tilt Sensor
The tilt sensor reports the direction it is tilted. The tilt sensor detects changes within six different  positions: Tilt This Way, Tilt That Way, Tilt Up, Tilt Down, No Tilt and Any Tilt.

Motion Sensor
The motion sensor detects objects within a range of 15 centimeters (or about 6 inches)  depending on the design of the object.

Mindstorms Educational Robot

LEGO Mindstorms is a line of Lego sets combining programmable bricks with electric motors, sensors, Lego bricks, and Lego Technic pieces (such as gears, axles, and beams).

Mindstorms originated from the programmable sensor blocks used in the line of educational toys. The first retail version of Lego Mindstorms was released in 1998 and marketed commercially as the Robotics Invention System (RIS). The current version was released in 2006 as Lego Mindstorms NXT.

The hardware and software roots of the Mindstorms Robotics Invention System kit go back to the programmable brick created at the MIT Media lab. This brick was programmed in Brick Logo. The first visual programming environment, called LEGOsheets,[1] for this brick was created by the University of Colorado in 1994 and was based on AgentSheets.

The original Mindstorms Robotics Invention System kit contained two motors, two touch sensors, and one light sensor. The NXT version has three servo motors and four sensors for touch, light, sound, and distance. Lego Mindstorms may be used to build a model of an embedded system with computer-controlled electromechanical parts. Many kinds of real-life embedded systems, from elevator controllers to industrial robots, may be modelled using Mindstorms.

Mindstorms kits are also sold and used as an educational tool, originally through a partnership between Lego and the MIT Media Laboratory.[2][3] The educational version of the products is called Lego Mindstorms for Schools, and comes with the ROBOLAB GUI-based programming software, developed at Tufts University[4] using the National Instruments LabVIEW as an engine. The only difference between the educational series, known as the "Challenge Set", and the consumer series, known as the "Inventor Set", is another included light sensor and several more gearing options.

Sensors are connected to the NXT brick using a 6-position modular connector that features both analog and digital interfaces. The analog interface is backward-compatible (using an adapter) with the older Robotics Invention System. The digital interface is capable of both I2C and RS-485 communication.

INSciTE ROBOLAB 2.5 Software Training Lab

INSciTE   ROBOLAB 2.5 Software Training Lab

Introduction to ROBOLAB Programming

Requirements to use this lesson document:
    1.  LEGO Robotics Invention System  (The large box with the 700+ Lego parts – any version will work
        fine).
    2.  One LEGO rotation sensor.
    3.  ROBOLAB 2.5 software (2.0 will also work.)
    4.  PC.  Either a Windows PC or a MAC. (A notebook is best, but a desktop PC will do.)
    5.  White-topped table

The Hardware
The brain of the Robotics Invention System is the RCX, which stands for Robotics Command System.  The
RCX is a microcomputer, built into a yellow LEGO brick. The RCX uses sensors (such as touch and light) to  take input from its environment.    It can then process the data to make motors turn on and off.
To perform the lessons in this class, you will build a simple robot using a minimum number of parts.

The Software
FLL allows participating teams to use one of two programming languages, RIS (Robotics Invention System)
and ROBOLAB.  This class uses ROBOLAB.

For teams using MACs, ROBOLAB is the only choice.  ROBOLAB is based on LabVIEW, which allows
programming capabilities well beyond those needed for success in FLL competitions. In contrast, many people  think that RIS is easier to learn than ROBOLAB.  Neither language seems to have an edge in the competition.

Your kids may use ROBOLAB 2.0.  Version 2.5 adds some capabilities, including the ability to connect the
USB IR tower that became standard with the Mindstorm 2.0 kits.

When ROBOLAB or RIS programs are downloaded to the RCX, the programs are a type called “embedded code”.  Embedded water in a rock means the water is “stuck” inside the rock.  Embedded code means that the program is “stuck” inside the RCX – there is no way to change the code after it is downloaded.  Programs can only be modified on the PC!

When kids program on the PC, they are entering commands in ROBOLAB or RIS. ROBOLAB or RIS use human readable commands.  When downloading the program to the RCX, the PC converts the RIS or ROBOLAB commands to bytecode. Firmware, in the yellow brick, converts bytecode into machine code. which a microprocessor in the yellow brick understands.  Machine code is easy for machines but does not make much sense to humans.

Remote Control for RCX Lego Mindstorm NXT

Remote Control for RCX Lego Mindstorm NXT

The LEGO MindStorms remote is a battery-operated, hand-held infrared remote control that can command an RCX to start and stop programs, run motors, and respond to three of the one-byte messages implemented by the standard RCX firmware. Even if the RCX is running a program, the motors can be controlled from the remote. Any motor commands will temporarily override the program's current motor settings. As soon as the RCX receives (or assumes) the "all buttons released" command from the remote the motors will resume their current programmed state, and if no program is running all motors will stop.

The remote has sixteen buttons which can be pressed simultaneously in any combination. Whenever one or more buttons is held down, the remote transmits data packets containing a bit field that indicates the state of all sixteen buttons. After the last button is released, the remote sends one final packet containing all "0" bits to indicate that no buttons are pressed.

The RCX does not acknowledge the remote's command packets, and if it does not receive valid packets continuously, it will assume "all buttons up" after a short interval. The RCX will not recognize the infrared remote protocol until after the factory firmware file (either firm0309.lgo or firm0328.lgo) has been downloaded. It should be noted that some replacement RCX firmwares implement their own interpretation of the buttons on the remote.

ELECTRONIC BRICK - MOISTURE SENSOR

What is an electronic brick? An electronic brick is an electronic module which can be assembled like Lego bricks simply by plugging in and pulling out. Compared to traditional universal boards and circuit modules assembled with various electronic components, electronic brick has standardized interfaces, plug and play, simplifying construction of prototype circuit on one’s own. There are many types of electronic bricks, and we provide more than twenty types with different functions including buttons, sensors, Bluetooth modules, etc, whose functions cover from sensor to motor drive, from Ethernet to wireless communication via Bluetooth, and so on. We will continue to add more types to meet the various needs of different projects.

Electronic brick of soil moisture sensor is mainly used to detect the moisture content in the soil. The control board can get the moisture value or threshold in the soil via analog or digital pins.

RS Media bring technology to life

RS Media bring technology to life, playing MP3's, MPEG4's, and taking photos & videos as he interacts with his environment. He has a head-mounted camera, a colour LCD screen in his chest, a full speakers system embedded in his armor, 40 MB of internal memory, and an external memory card slot.

Control RS Media with his controller or the media controls embedded on his hands; play Java games, navigate the media menus, switch between his four personalities (RS Media, Service Bot 3000, Space Bot, and Billy-Joen Sapien) or create your own personality using the RS Media editing suite software. The RS Media is able to walk around the house, effectively "seeing" with infrared vision and moving about like an old man in a park feeding pigeons thanks to foot and gauntlet sensors. If the robot "hears" a sound, it will investigate and confront the culprit.

* It can display an image or MPEG video downloaded by the user onto the robot’s removable SD memory sticks, on the LCD display

* The ability to store body movements with the user being the puppet master, like Robosapien V2 can. However, it will allow the user to edit those movements with the robot’s accompanying BodyCon editing package

* You can record and store your voice into the robot’s SD memory sticks which can be played back by the robot

* Includes a USB port, protocol version 1.0, for interfacing with the robot

* It can play back music files that you download to it through it’s 11 watt stereo speakers; making the robot something akin to a programmable roving boom box.

* You can play Java games and navigate the media menus. The most interesting feature of the new Robosapien RS Media robot is the ability to modify and swap personalities, thanks to the removable SD memory cards.
