Weather Meters

Whether you're an agriculturalist, a professional meteorologist or a weather hobbyist, building your own weather station can be a really rewarding project. When you're measuring weather, however, you need some pretty specialized sensors. This kit represents the three core components of weather measurement: wind speed, wind direction and rainfall.

None of the sensors in this kit contain active electronics, instead they use sealed magnetic reed switches and magnets so you'll need to source a voltage to take any measurements. The positive side of this is that the sensors are easy to interpret:

The rain gauge is a self-emptying bucket-type rain gauge which activates a momentary button closure for each 0.011" of rain that are collected. The anemometer (wind speed meter) encodes the wind speed by simply closing a switch which each rotation. A wind speed of 1.492 MPH produces a switch closure once per second. Finally, the wind vane reports wind direction as a voltage which is produced by the combination of resistors inside the sensor. When a voltage is supplied, the voltage returned can be translated to any of 16 possible positions. For more information on how this works, as well as a table of voltage and resistance values for each position, refer to the manual below.

All of the included sensors are supplied with RJ11 terminated cables, for information on the pin-out of the cable, check out the datasheet.

Designed in conjunction with Grand Idea Studio, the Parallax Laser Range Finder (LRF) Module is a distance-measuring instrument that uses laser technology to calculate the distance to a targeted object. Distance to a targeted object is calculated by optical triangulation using simple trigonometry between the centroid of laser light, camera, and object.

AG9000-S Power over Ethernet module

The Ag9000 is ideal for any Ethernet peripheral up to 12W, such as IP phones and gateways, wireless access points, web cameras and security cameras, door entry systems, RFID tag readers, security systems (PIR, fire detectors, etc), network drives, Bluetooth access points and video servers.

The device is a fully self-contained 10-pin SIL (single in line) device, providing an isolated DC-DC converter with signature recognition compliant to IEEE 802.3af. Available with outputs of 3.3V, 5.0V or 12.0V, the Ag9000 requires just one external capacitor. The combination of features and packaging offers extremely efficient use of board area, saving significant system size and cost, minimising time to market for developers of Ethernet peripherals.
This new product contains the signature recognition circuitry listed in IEEE 802.3af. This ensures that it will inter-operate with any PSE (power sourcing equipment) midspan or endspan that conforms to the same standard. Also included is a DC-DC converter with 1500V input to output isolation, which takes the 48V fed by the PSE via the Category 5 Ethernet cable over either the spare pairs or the signal pairs. It is a complete solution in a single package with emphasis on small size, low cost and ease of use.
Additional features include the ability to program the IEEE 802.3af power classification (default is class 0), and the ability to vary the output voltage by up to  10%. Ag9000 makes up to 12W of power available to the powered device.

UM6-LT Orientation Sensor

The UM6-LT Orientation Sensor is an OEM version of the UM6.  Like the UM6, the UM6-LT combines data from rate gyros, accelerometers, and magnetic sensors to produce real-time attitude and heading measurements using either quaternions or Euler Angles.
The expansion boards designed for the UM6 can be used with the UM6-LT, but soldering will be necessary.
The UM6-LT is a pin-compatible replacement for the CHR-6dm, which has been discontinued.  While the footprint is compatible with the 6dm, the UM6-LT utilizes the communication protocol of the UM6, not the 6dm.

Wireless Mini Queue System

Wireless Mini Queue System (WMQS) is the latest development of the Mini Queue System (MQS). WMQS no longer use the cable for each key caller queue, but have been using Wireless Key Fob that does not require the installation of cables.

GDS-3000 Series digital storage oscilloscopes

GW Instek GDS-3000 Series digital storage oscilloscopes are equipped with a built-in self-developed waveform image processing system which significantly enhances the waveform capture rate. We call this VPO (Visual Persistence Oscilloscope) Technology.

The first generation of analog oscilloscopes (Analog oscilloscope CRT display as shown in Figure Fig. 1a) utilized fluorescent materials to capture fast electronic signals to generate a dot on a screen. By controlling the intensity and bias of an electron beam, the brightness and tracking of a signal could be generated. This was used to reconstruct a waveform image that would be displayed on a screen for a short time. For this reason, one can observe the details of a signal while the signal is changing with the naked eye.


Digital storage oscilloscopes, usually viewed as 2nd generation oscilloscope (DSO, as shown in Figure Fig. 1b) mainly convert analog signals into digital signals through high-speed analog to digital converters (ADC). These signals are then stored in its memory for the CPU to process and draw the waveform. The design of a DSO puts some of its functions far beyond the reach of analog oscilloscopes. For example: waveform storage, math operations (Example: - * / FFT), automatic measurements and pre-triggers. The only reason why analog oscilloscopes still fascinate so many people is because of their ability to display a signal in real-time. 

Conversely, this is also the greatest disadvantage of digital storage oscilloscopes. As the CPU in a DSO does not have the processing power to process a waveform as fast as the signal is changing, only part of the signal is captured and processed. The section of time for when a signal is not captured is called Dead Time (Fig. 1c). The longer the dead time is, the greater the chance of not detecting a rapid change in the signal. If a DSO cannot detect such signals then it is unable to meet the demands of a modern measurement instrument.


The waveform image processing system designed and developed by GW Instek are mainly used to share the data processing with the CPU, shortening the time needed to draw a waveform and consequently increasing the waveform capture rate.

Furthermore, in order to create a display performance similar to that of analog oscilloscopes, the waveform data for all channels is displayed as a three dimensional image (amplitude, time and intensity). When a strong signal is generated, the waveform will be brighter and the waveform will persist for a longer time, allowing users to easily grasp any instantaneous changes in the waveform. By using an image processing system, waveform data can be quickly acquired by the DSO, processed and displayed on the screen with multiple levels of intensity almost as quickly as an analog oscilloscope.
